What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the method of using specialized needles in specific locations on the body to help relieve pressure or pain. It has been used to treat humans for thousands of years in China, and originally was used to unblock the energies, or qi, flowing through the body. In more modern terms, the use of the needles on trigger points (places where there are pain and tightness, similar to a knot in the neck) can stimulate the nerves to cause an analgesic response. After several treatments, those trigger points can be completely eliminated.

Is Acupuncture safe?

Completely. Each acupuncture treatment uses only specialized and sterilized needles. They are inserted only a small amount – enough to stimulate the nerves, but not enough to cause any pain or distress. Acupuncture should only be performed by a trained professional.

What medical conditions can be treated with acupuncture?

Pets with a variety of illnesses and injuries can benefit from the use of acupuncture. It is often used for pain management and can be used as an alternative or in combination with traditional western medicine. Because each pet’s treatment will be decided case-by-case, each pet’s treatment plan will begin with a consultation with our Veterinary Acupuncturist, Dr. Lisa Yung. From there she will decide if acupuncture is the best course of action, and will detail a recommended treatment plan.

How many acupuncture treatments will my pet need?

As with human medicine, each animal is individual and will react differently to acupuncture. Even if they are receiving treatment for the same affliction, some animals may see a benefit right away, while others may need several treatments before they feel an improvement. Not all ailments may be treatable with acupuncture; in most cases, acupuncture is not curing the disease but can offer some much-needed relief from the symptoms.
