10 Ways to Help Your Pet Live Longer and Save You a Bunch of Money on Vet Bills at the Same Time!

Our series of blog posts so far have covered:
#1 – Having a financial plan to cover the costs of veterinary care
#2 – The value of the yearly physical examination
#3 – “Feed Really Good Food!”
The old saying, “You are what you eat”, is just as true of our pets as it is for ourselves! Many pet owners try and save a little money by feeding their pets low quality food thinking that all brands are pretty much the same! However, keep in mind that pet food companies want to sell their products to every pet owner, so they manufacture foods of various qualities in order to try and hit everyone’s budget.
In general, these companies market their lower quality foods through grocery and big box stores, their best foods through pet food stores such as Petco and Petsmart, and their special-needs diets through veterinary clinics.

Two good rules of thumb are:
1) You get what you pay for when it comes to pet food
2) Buy people food at people food stores and pet food at pet food stores or through your veterinarian!!

Our current recommendations are:
Dogs – Grain-free, high quality foods such as Blue Buffalo, Taste of the Wild, and Wellness Core

Cats – High protein, low carb canned foods such as Wellness, Blue Buffalo, and Orijen. Cats in particular need foods high in moisture and protein (meat!!) and low in carbohydrates (sugar/grain) in order to help prevent health troubles such as obesity, diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, and early kidney disease.

Special Needs – If your pet requires a special-needs diet for health troubles such as allergies, liver or kidney troubles, etc. you can obtain these here at the clinic, or through our online store.

In some cases, feeding raw foods instead of highly processed pet foods may be beneficial. Our current recommendation for raw feeding is to use the foods manufactured by the Darwins company, who deliver their products to your home. We have brochures and free samples available!

All high quality well-pet and special-needs diets are overpriced (in our humble opinion), but the benefits to your pet (and your wallet!) in treating, preventing or delaying many health problems far outweigh the extra cost of the food!
